“Getting ready for Comet ISON”
A representative from The Rothney Astrophysical Observatory will come and speak to us about the discovery of comet C/2012 S1 (ISON). This comet, that is currently just beyond the orbit of Jupiter, has spent the last 13 months moving towards a near miss of the Sun which should occur in November of 2013. The current orbital calculations indicate it will come to within 2 million kilometers of the Sun (about 8 times the distance from earth to our moon) and then if it survives this passage will pass around to about half the distance between earth and the sun. One of my favorite websites about this Comet is www.jmccanneyscience.com Check it out for some good information.
