One out of five US Adults live with some form of mental health issue, 300 million people worldwide have an anxiety disorder, there’s a death by suicide every 40 seconds and things are only getting worse. Most current approaches to mental health care are not effective and we see these numbers rising each day. Researchers have found a new way of approaching mental health.
Various clinical trials with psychedelics are demonstrating both safety and efficacy. The data is so good that MDMA and Psilocybin have been both cleared for fast track review by the FDA and could find their way into hospitals and treatment clinics within a few years, if not sooner. MDMA is being used for treating PTSD. Psilocybin is being used to treat depression and a Ketamine-based nasal spray was approved last year by the FDA for treating severe depression.
Many people report having breakthroughs in therapy using psychedelics, partially because they gain new perspectives on an issue. Scientists call this “cognitive flexibility.” If you can become conscious of your patterns and your beliefs, these core beliefs and how you attain these beliefs, then you can let go of them. Rigid feeling, thought, and behavioral patterns can unclench; the self can rearrange itself and develop its inner and outer resources more deeply. So there we get to the concept of a true self and one that can be reconfigured, or at least rediscovered with the help of psychedelics, particularly psychoactive plants like ayahuasca.
7 years working at Vancouver Hospital and almost two decades working with addictions, Dr. Gabor Mate, M.D discus’s the potential ability of psychedelic substances, like ayahuasca, to reverse medical issues like cancer and addiction when coupled with therapy.
